Speakeasy’s 13th Anniversary Party Review

To me it seemed Speakeasy’s 13th anniversary party was a huge success.  It was the third time I’ve been to the brewery, and attendence was far and beyond anythying I expected to see.  The weather was sunny with a bit of wind, and live bands played inside, but I was there for one reason, ok maybe two reasons: Midnight Run IBA and the 9.8% ABV version of Betrayal. They also had their Payback Porter on cask.  Midnight Run was one of the best India Black Ales (Cascadian Dark Ale?) that I’ve ever tasted.  Very little roast (if any), moderate amount of bitter balanced by a perfectly smooth malt foundation.  I hope someday this beer becomes a mainstay for Speakeasy.  The 9.8% Betrayal, was a Red Ale that morphed into a strong ale.  It was not very balanced, but at the same time, a very drinkable strong ale with subtle malt layers and low bittering that masked the high alcohol content inside.  It is always a pleasure to drink Speakeasy’s special releases that outshine any of their production releases by a large margin.  If you’ve only had their regular line up, I would recommed making it out to a special event to see what these guys can really do.  You will not regret it.
